I DARE YOU By Sam Carrington

Mapledon, 1989. Two little girls were out playing a game of dares. Only one returned home. The ten year old told police what she saw: village loner Bill ‘Creepy’ Cawley dragged her friend into his truck and disappeared. No body was found, but her testimony sent Cawley to prison for murder. An open and shut case, the right man behind bars. The village could sleep safe again.

Now…. Anna thought she had left Mapledon and her nightmares behind but a distraught phone call brings her back to face her past. 30 years ago, someone lied. 30 years ago, the man convicted wasn’t the only guilty party. Now he’s out of prison and looking for revenge. The question is, who will he start with?

I found the start of this to be a little bit slow, but once the story started flowing it had me engrossed. The timeline worked well switching back and forth 1989 to present, painting a full picture of what happened 30 years earlier. With multiple perspectives of strong and very distinctive characters, well depicted. It could be so easy to get lost with the timelines and different characters, but you didn’t it worked well and was easy to follow.

Bella and Jodie are 10 years old, and have been friends for years, but what happened that day? When they were out together, playing a childhood game of knock, knock Ginger, when only Bella came home? Bella was the last person to see Jodie alive. But was Bella a credible witness in the disappearance of her friend?

Thirty years on Bella goes by the name of Anna. She returns home to the small village of Mapledon, with Lizzie a reporter. Her mum called her home as someone had stuck parts of a doll to her front door, inside there are notes claiming someone knows a secret. Anna and Lizzie are determined to find out why, and if these events are linked to Creepy Cawley. Her return to Mapledon coincides with Bill’s release from prison. But when they start digging up the past they may discover more than they bargained for.

Billy Cawley is being released from prison 30 years after he was found guilty of committing a heinous crime. He was known as Creepy Cawley before he was arrested and sent to prison. What happened to the then 10 year old Jodie Hayes, where is her body.

Each character in the story has a secret, gradually these secrets start to become known. Was Bill (creepy) Cawley guilty of the crime he was charged for? Or has an innocent man been to prison for 30 years? Just because he was slightly different an introvert, a private person. Seeing his point of view is interesting and adds to the thrill of the story.

How far do you go as a parent to protect your children? your reputation? and keep secrets buried?
