THE PERFECT MOTHER by Caroline Mitchell

She thought they wanted her baby. But they won’t stop there.

Roz is young, penniless and pregnant. All she wants is to be the perfect mother to her child, but the more she thinks about her own chaotic upbringing, the more certain she is that the best life for her baby is as far away as possible from her hometown in Ireland.

Determined to do the right thing, Roz joins an elite adoption service and can’t believe her luck. Within days she is jetting to. Ew York to meet a celebrity power couple desperate for a child of their own. Sheridan and Daniel are wealthy and glamorous – everything Roz isn’t. Her baby will never go hungry, and will have every opportunity for the perfect life. But soon after Roz moves into their plush basement suite, she starts to suspect that something darker lurks beneath the glossy surface of their home.

When Roz discovers she isn’t the first person to move in with the couple, and that the previous woman has never been since, alarm bells start the clock ticks down to her due date, Roz realises her unborn baby may be the only thing keeping her alive, and that despite her best intentions, she has walked them both into the perfect nightmare….

I have a few of this authors books, which are a part of a series, but was really thrilled to get a copy of this stand-alone book.

Overall I enjoyed it, Roz a 24 year old Irish girl with no money, finds herself pregnant, being raised as a catholic, she has to make a choice on what to do, does she try and bring the baby up alone, or does she put it up for adoption with a good family, who could provide things she couldn’t.

She decides to register on a website, that says it will find a good family and a decent home. Roz’s profile is matched with what the site calls a ‘diamond’ couple, Julie & Greg, are rich and famous. Roz thinks this is the perfect solution, and before she knows it she is flying to NYC. However, nothing is as it seems, despite the facade this couple puts on to the outside world, where their fame is known. Behind closed doors there are some dark secrets.

Roz becomes afraid, she is stuck in a basement flat, and is being made to stick to a strict regime, with no contact with her friends or family, she knows she must escape this couple, to save herself and her baby. This story is told by a number of points of view, with Sheridan and Roz who are the main focus of the story.

Although I enjoyed this, I did guess the plot twists, there are some good characters, which it would have been nice to see a little more of, Roz is very naive. I would have a little more of Roz’s friend Dympna. It also seemed like the ending was rushed. But overall good.

I give this book ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ out of ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I would like to thank #netgalley and #Thomas&Mercer for an eARC of this book in exchange for a fair, honest and unbiased review.
