MIDTOWN HUCKSTER (Alex Cohen #3) By Leopald Borstinski #MidtownHuckster #AlecCohenSeries @borstinski @damppebbles #damppebblesblogtours #Bookblogger

I would like to thank Emma from #damppebblesblogtours for my spot on this tour.

This is book 3 in the Alex Cohen series, having read the first two, we now see Alex trying to work himself up with some of the mobsters he has been working with over the years. With prohibition coming to an end, the gangs are trying to work out how they can still earn a good income. Because once alcohol becomes legal they realise their businesses won’t be making as much money. Alex is offered the chance to go into the heroin market but he is unsure on this. Him and His wife Sarah are still separated, and Sarah is looking at moving on.

Alex is loyal to his friends, but cross him and things will not go well. Now running the syndicate Murder Inc, Where if someone crosses any of these mobsters, and it is proven then permission is granted to have the person bumped off. Alex seems to see killing someone as all part of business now. Sort of the norm, no emotions. He treats it like it’s just an everyday job.

Things don’t seem to be going well for Alex in this book, as I was reading this I wasn’t sure who he could actually trust. His life seems to be all about work and money. Now a special prosecutor, Thomas Dewey, is hunting all the mobsters down, determined to get them one by one, taking them to court for Tax evasion. Al Capone is sent away, followed by Charlie. Alex is offered a deal, but will he take it? It would mean grassing on his friends.

This time it covers from 1930/36, as usual the story is fast paced, gritty. Despite Alex being a gangster and at times a thug, there is still something about him that you find redeeming. He is loyal to his friends and lieutenants, refusing to give them up even if it means him doing hard time in prison. Alex is still striving to get to the top. There were times that his opinions were ignored. Now with the FBI determined to get them all. This book made him seem more vulnerable, he doesn’t see a lot of his children. Sarah, doesn’t want to get back together. So all he has is work, and this drive to get more money, but you have to wonder when will he have enough money? when will he enjoy the money?

Another interesting, riveting, engaging read in this series. All of these books can be read as stand alone novels, but I think to get the best overall effects of what makes Alex Cohen real is to start with book one. When his family first arrived in New York and how he got involved with the people he hangs with. Definitely worth reading the series. I gave this one 4⭐️ out of 5⭐️. Look forward to book 4 to see where things go next.

Can you keep your gelt and freedom when the cops have enough evidence to take you down?

1930’s Jewish gangster, Alex Cohen runs Murder Inc for Lucky Luciano. After the death of Prohibition he must find a new way to make money, just as the cops are baying at his heels. When Luciano goes down for racketeering, Alex loses his protection and is arrested for tax evasion – he must decide between saving his skin and ratting out his friends.

If he chooses prison time then his gang will fall apart and he will end up with nothing. If he squeals then he will have to flee the city he loves and the family he once adored. What would you do in a world where nobody can be trusted and you have everything to lose?

The third book in the Alex Cohen series is an historical noir novel, which plunges you deep into the early days of narcotics trafficking and the Jewish New York mob. Leopold Borstinski’s piercing crime fiction delivers a fix to every reader like heroin from a needle.
