CASINO CHISELER (Alex Cohen Book 4) By Leopold Borstinski #CasinoChiseler #AlexCohenSeries @borstinski @damppebbles #damppebblesblogtours #Bookblogger

I would like to thank Emma from #damppebblesblogtours for my spot on this tour.

Would you gamble everything you possess to win more than you can imagine?

Jewish gangster, Alex Cohen leaves jail to find salvation from the 1940s mob in the hotels of Las Vegas. When Bugsy Siegel invites him to take over sports betting in Nevada, Alex must figure out how to get back to the top table in New York without attracting the Feds’ attention.

If he succeeds then he will regain his self respect, but if he fails then the last members of the national crime syndicate will cut him dead and he will be left a nobody or wind up a corpse. And after he bumps into his childhood sweetheart, he has a once in a lifetime opportunity to win her heart. But Alex knows the criminal underworld has the habit of spilling over into his personal life and when Meyer Lansky asks him to murder Siegel, Alex must choose what is truly important to him.

The fourth book in the Alex Cohen series is an historical thriller novel, which rips open the Jewish mob’s involvement in the birth of modern Vegas. Leopold Borstinski’s shattering crime fiction deals a royal flush to each reader.

Having read the first three books in this series I was excited to see what Alex was going to get up to next. Especially after where he had ended up at the end of book 3.

The book begins in 1950 where it is mentioned Alex is due to give some sort of testimony, but what? We have no idea. Because then we go back in time to 1940 and book four covers this decade.

It’s interesting times for Alex, he desperately wanted to be allowed back in the syndicate but being Jewish still doesn’t go down with some, so Alex is not allowed back, but they dangle a carrot hinting that he may be allowed back in the future as long as he does any jobs they ask of him. And it’s not long before they want a job done, Alex is the only person they believe can do it. Forever loyal Alex takes the risk. His friend Meyer suggests he heads off to Cuba after the job or even Las Vegas where his friend Benny Siegel is trying to set up a casino. Alex had been staying in Los Angeles but was getting bored and feeling lonely. Unable to be in New York had seemed to hit him hard, not seeing old friends. But prison seems to have mellowed Alex a little. He is no longer hot headed he is able to think things through more.

We see Los Angeles before it becomes the big gambling city we know it to be now. The dreams of Benny Siegel to have gambling, entertainment, live shows, and hotel rooms above the casino’s had previously been laughed at. But it seems no one is laughing now. As Benny gets the syndicate involved in a new place the Flamingo, but at $6 million where is all the money going? Alex is setting up a wire service providing racing results to bookmakers, of course the bookmakers have to pay for this service. Along with this he has his Nafka’s set up in hotel rooms. Forever trying to make money.

But do we see Alex happy? There is a short space of time when he sees the one person he fell in love with in the first book Rebecca and they begin seeing each other, but things don’t end well. Despite this Alex manages to stay focused on his work, this again shows how he has matured. Even later when he is asked to do a tough job on someone who is ripping off the syndicate he puts his emotions to the side and takes care of business. Full of characters you will love and some you will hate.

I’ve sat wondering why it is I like Alex, I mean at the end of the day he is a hitman, he kills people and gets paid for it, it means nothing to him that he has taken a life, but there is just this other part of him that shows him as a loyal person, whether that is to the syndicate or to his ex wife Sarah, who he is very protective towards. Over the last four books we have seen Alex do some truly horrific things but each time I look forward to coming back to see what he is up to next.

This was yet another thoroughly enjoyable, entertaining, engrossing read, fitting in with the times of the mafia, racketeering, gambling, drug dealing. Alex is a great character who just grows on you the more you get to know him, having followed from book one he has developed and grown. He is a likeable rogue, who has done what he’s done to survive initially, but it’s now a way of life for him. A highly recommend if you haven’t read the first three books you grab them, get to know what made Alex the man he is now. All 4 books are very good reads, well thought out, great plots and brilliantly written.
