Louise wakes up, her head aches, her mouth is dry, her memory is fuzzy. But she suspect’s she’s done something bad.
She rolls over towards her husband, Niall. The man who, until recently, made her feel loved.
But it’s not Niall who’s lying beside her. In fact, she’s never seen this man before.
And he’s not breathing…..
As Louise desperately struggles to piece her memories back together. It’s clear to Detective Jonah Sheens and his team that she is their prime suspect – though they soon find she’s not the only one with something to hide.
Did she do it? And, if not, can they catch the real killer before they strike again?
As soon as I had signed up for this blog tour I knew I had to read the first two books in the series which were sitting on my bookcase already. I will say you don’t have to read the first two to enjoy this one as it can be read as a stand alone book. But for me I like to get to know the characters, and in some ways I’m glad I did as there are a couple of bits that follow on through from book one to this one, mainly to do with a couple of the characters relationships, not just as colleagues but also in their private lives.
Imagine going out for the evening then waking up to find there is a dead body lying next to you in your bed, and it’s not your husband, this is what happens to Louise Reakes. Her husband is away in Geneva. Louise can’t remember what happened or can she? Did she kill this young man? Or is she being set up?
DCI Jonah sheens and his team are in charge of cracking the case. But when the crime is reported the body is that of a male in a front garden, Louise Reakes claims she found him there when she went to get a pint of milk off the doorstep.
The story is told in alternating chapters one chapter is the investigation, the other chapters are Louise writing a type of letter to her husband. The marriage is a strange one, Niall had met Louise at a wedding they were both attending. Louise plays the harp and was playing at this particular wedding. But Louise has two characters sober Louise who sees herself as dull and boring and drunk Louise who is a much happier funnier person or so she thinks. The problem is it seems she is having to drink more and more to be that person, it also has led to some embarrassing moments where she can’t remember things.
There are plenty of the usual twists and turns to keep you guessing throughout the story. As the tension builds up throughout. The dead man turns out to be gay and married, so how did he end up in bed with a woman, that’s the question his husband wants to know. Did the husband know? There is definitely no shortage of suspects. Just as you think you may have sorted it another twist takes the story in a whole new direction. Even as the team think they have the whole thing sorted Hanson realises they have it wrong.
I found the relationship between April and Louise fascinating, trying to work out if April was involved in more things going on, she seemed to know a lot about Louise’s husband Niall and his ex wife Dina, was Niall still seeing his ex Dina?, was he still in love with her?
I am loving seeing this whole team evolve and grow, as each book gives us a little more insight into the characters. Some of the personal issues they have especially Juliette Hanson, and the outcome of that. I can’t wait for the next book in the series to see what comes next especially with DCI Sheens.
Overall, a great read and a series I highly recommend, but if like me you like to get to know the characters start with book one She Lies in Wait followed by Watching From The Dark.
A 5⭐️ read and a 5⭐️ series. I would like to thank #EllaWatkins and @MichaelJBooks for and advanced copy of the book. All views and opinions are my own and are not influenced in any way.
