A crime wave sweeps through the city and no-one is safe. An arson at the docks. A carjacking gone wrong. A murder in a country park. What connects all these crimes without causes, which leave no clues?

Detective Inspector Helen Grace faces the rising tide of cases which threatens to drown the city. But each crime is just a piece of a puzzle which is falling into place.

And when if becomes clear just how twisted and ingenious this web of crime is, D.I.Grace will realise that it may be impossible to stop it ….

I absolutely love this series, I have been reading it since the first book Eeny Meeny was published. Now this is book 10 with DI Helen Grace.

Helen really has her hands full in this one, with the crime rate rising in Southampton the pressure is on. It doesn’t help that DS Joseph Hudson is currently her second in command whilst DS Charlene ‘Charlie’ Brooks is on maternity leave. Helen and Joseph had had a brief relationship, until Helen learnt a few things about Joseph that showed him in a different light, this had in turn made things awkward and Joseph was making things as awkward as he possibly could for Helen, undermining her in front of other members of the team, he was also winning some of the team over making them believe that Helen no longer had what it took to run the MIT team.

On top of everything else the local reporter Emilia Garanita was on Helen’s back, reaching crime scenes either ahead or almost the same time as Helen, how was she getting the information? She wants to bring Helen down, she is reporting everything she can about the investigations, saying that the police are not able to deal with the crime rate. Or namely Helen isn’t able to solve the crimes.

The story is told over 7 days as the team try to solve the crimes they currently have on the board, but with no leads it’s making things harder. The team currently have four Murders with no leads, one a fatal mugging, an aggravated burglary, a car jacking, and the most recent the murder of Eve Sutcliffe a young student. To top things off a new case comes in the attack on a Declan McManus who had been set alight. There seemed to be nothing linking these crimes as well as no clues as to why any of them were targeted. McManus was an ex detective sergeant a disgraced one who had been dismissed for Fraud among other things, now working as a private detective.

DS Hudson believes he knows who is to blame for three of the murders, when a piece of fibre is recovered from the McManus crime scene, that is from an expensive hoody, 15 people had purchased them and Lee Moffat was on the list, to Hudson that makes him guilty, because he was known for certain crimes. But Helen dismisses this theory. But Hudson is determined to prove her wrong.

When another man is murdered even more pressure is added, except the team may have its first break if only they can work out if all these crimes are linked or not, if they are what links them? Who wanted these people dead? Why?

This is a fast paced, gripping, intense read, that will have you sitting on the edge of your seat, as the race is on to find out who is committing these crimes. But it doesn’t stop there the tension is rising for Helen as Hudson steps up the heat, could she lose her job?

With high adrenaline car chases, more dead bodies, the pressure is on.

This is an absolute ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ read and I cannot wait for the next book now, to see where things will go next. If you love a fast paced, gripping read then buy yourself a copy of this. It will have you hooked. It can be read as a stand-alone novel.

I would like to thank @orionbooks for my gifted ARC of this book, all thoughts and opinions are my own and not influenced in any way.
