MY REVIEW

I will do anything! Please!’

The cold metal nozzle presses against my forehead. The fear is physical, zinging through me like a current. Tears stream down my face and I sob without restraint, my face scrunched with anguish and saliva stringing between my lips. I blurt out the first excuse that I can muster, words tumbling from my lips in a scream.

This is one of the most anticipated thriller reads of 2022. I’ve seen and read lots about it and now I have read it myself and boy does it have your heart racing. It is an unputdownable read, you need to be able to sit and read it in one sitting or it’s one of those books where you find yourself thinking I will just read one more chapter, which then leads to another etc etc…

So what’s it about? Dr Anna Jones is a renowned heart surgeon. In a couple of days she has a VIP patient who needs heart surgery.. Only a few members of staff know of the surgery. Security is high. Anna is currently going through a divorce she has an 8 year old son Zachary. When she arrives home from work on Thursday 4th August there are people in her house, removal lorries outside. When she dashes inside she is met by three men sitting in her lounge. She asks where her son is he is normally collected by her neighbour. But the men tell her they have her son. She will do as they ask if she wishes to see him again. She is to kill the VIP patient and get away with it, they have installed cameras throughout her house, she will be watched. If she doesn’t kill the patient they will kill her son. What would you do?

Margot is a nurse, she works in theatre, but Margot is broke she has no money, she owes money, she has resorted to stealing, she doesn’t see herself as a bad person. She will be assisting in the operation standing right next to Dr Anna Jones.

Inspector Rachel Conaty is investigating the murder of a woman found dumped in a well. She has been shot in the head, her fingertips and teeth have been removed. Who would want this elderly woman dead? Why?

The story is told from the points of view of the three main characters Anna, Margot and Rachel each of them have their issues, obviously Anna has a decision to make does she kill her patient to try and save her son? Margot has had a tough upbringing but thought she had escaped it by becoming a nurse, but finding herself in debt leads to desperation. Rachel is absolutely certain she is looking at the one person who knows what happened to the old lady. But there is one issue, something happened in her life which her superiors feel is making her focus in one direction and not looking at the bigger picture. But she is like a dog with a bone.

My initial thoughts were yes I would kill the patient to save my child, but as I was reading I began thinking if she kills the patient what leverage does she have against the men holding her son. What if they kill him anyway and then her? But I stuck with kill the patient, sorry, I know the words of a dr are Do No Harm. But if it’s your child I think you would do anything to protect them. Anna is at times focused but then she has to be to do her job. There are times she breaks down, but she knows she has to stay strong, because she has to kill a patient without it looking suspicious, when all eyes are on you in theatre that’s not easy to do. Could she go to the police? She knows she is being watched all the time. There were times I felt sorry for her as a mother but then other times I wanted to slap her. In fact there were times when I wanted to slap each of the three women. I found Margot to be tough as nails most of the time, but even she occasionally showed a softer side. Again the same with Rachel.

As the story progresses you learn more about Margot and Rachel. What has made them the way they are. The story builds from that moment that Anna is given the ultimatum the tension increases, gradually getting more and more engrossing, your heart starts to pound in your ears as you are holding your breath hoping that the characters will escape the next situation, as that one comes to an end their is another conundrum to solve. This is an absolute rollercoaster ride of a read the ups and downs are so fast paced and the ending is 💥💥💥💥💥💥

I was hooked from page one until that final scene, if you want an explosive thriller then get yourself a copy of this because you will not be disappointed. It’s a definite ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ read. With characters you will love one minute and hate the next. But you have to decide who will you save? The patient? The Child? You can only save one.

I would like to thank @TandemcollectiveUK and @simonschusteruk for my spot on the read along as well as for my AD-PR Product gifted copy I have loved every minute of it despite reading the book a bit faster.
