SYNOPSIS

Nox has been steadily working as a quartermaster for the rebellion for years. They don’t ask for much in return, except for one crucial thing — that their ex, the noble Lord Bastian, stays as far away from them as possible. To say things ended poorly between them is an understatement . . . and it’s the only relationship Nox has never quite recovered from.

But now the rules have changed. Siobhan, the rebel leader, has emerged from hiding to tell Nox that Bastian’s involvement in the rebellion has been discovered, and he’s being taken captive. The fate of the entire rebellion now rests on Nox and Siobhan’s ability to rescue Bastian from the Cwn Annwn ship.

Saving Bastian is only the start of their hardships, and Nox’s complicated relationships and entanglements with Bastian and Siobhan put not only their life at risk but their heart on the line.

MY THOUGHTS

This is the final book in Katee Robert’s trilogy, and while I’ve struggled to fully connect with the characters throughout the series, this last installment delivers a more engaging and emotionally satisfying experience.

The story picks up right where Book Two left off. Nox, the steadfast quartermaster-turned-reluctant-captain, faces their worst nightmare: Bastion, their noble ex-lover, has been captured by the Cwn Annan and is on trial for treason. When rebellion leader Siobhan steps out of the shadows to recruit Nox for a daring rescue mission, the stakes couldn’t be higher—not just for Bastion, but for the future of the entire rebellion.

The action-packed rescue mission is where the book truly shines. One standout moment involves a magical storm, where Nox pushes their elemental powers to dangerous extremes while Bastion crafts an elaborate glamour to deceive their pursuers. It’s one of the most thrilling scenes in the series and a testament to Robert’s ability to blend high-stakes action with deeply personal character moments. The balance between magical systems and emotional development really stands out here.

However, the pacing falters in the middle. Just when the story should be building to a climax, it feels rushed. Some of the central mythology—so carefully laid out in the first two books—becomes confusing, making the resolution feel a little muddled. It’s frustrating, especially in a finale, where clarity and payoff are crucial.

That said, this book showcases Robert’s strengths as a romance writer. There are some steamy scenes for readers who enjoy that element, and the emotional bonds between characters add depth to the high-stakes action. Nox’s journey—from bitter quartermaster to reluctant hero—is well done, and fans who have followed their growth will appreciate the arc’s resolution.

The maritime setting, strong character dynamics, and action sequences make this a fun and worthwhile read—despite its pacing and mythological missteps. Of the three books, this was definitely my favorite.
