MY REVIEW

This is the second novel to include Aspen Adams, although this can be read as a stand-alone novel, I felt it would have read better if I had read the first book in the series, mainly to know the backstory to the characters, I’m not a lover of reading books out of order.

Aspen Adams is dating Nick Shaper a Detective for the Placer County Sheriff Dept. Whilst Aspen is working as a PI for her aunt Maxine’s detective agency, although she is still learning the ropes, she does some dumpster diving, that she really doesn’t like but then who would, especially if you don’t find what you are looking for. What she really wants is to do is investigate, but I think she needs to learn a little patience! PI’s spend a lot of time sitting around, and doing dirty work. Aspen’s gynaecologist is murdered at the beginning of this story, Aspen thought she had been trying to call her with results from a biopsy. But when Nick calls her later he reveals that the Dr is dead. I get this is set in Lake Tahoe and I love the descriptions of the place, makes me want to just get on a plane and visit. But my problem is should he be giving her information. Later on he gets called out to another crime scene and she goes with him to protect him, but he is a police officer a detective, and we have been told he moved there to get away from murders and high crime rates, so why would he need Aspen with him? Sorry but that just bugged me a bit. My only gripe I promise.

Aspen is also now guardian of her niece Candace who is 14, she is upset at the Dr’s death as she had seen her, from what I can gather, when she first came to live with Aspen. Aspen is also a qualified therapist but she has given that up to focus on being a PI.

Aspen had got to know Gloria Morning during her last case, at the time Gloria was a reporter, but is now a co anchor for a year old news station KINC. Gloria asks Aspen if she could look into who is threatening her, random notes have been turning up professing to be saving Gloria from bad people in her life. The only problem is after she gets a letter, the person mentioned turns up dead!!! But none of the dead people have done anything to hurt Gloria, adding to her confusion. Or is she looking for more attention herself?

This is a well drawn out plot with lots of suspects to keep the reader guessing. I like Aspen and the relationship she has with Nick and want to learn more about how that is going to go, Candace seems mature for her 14 years but maybe she has had to be. With a mother as a drug addict.

This is an quick and easy book to read, I will go back and get the first book to see how things started. But if you want a quick relaxing read, with some lovely descriptions of Lake Tahoe. I can certainly recommend this. For me it’s a cozy curled up in a chair with a cup of cocoa type of read. Fun, great characters. I did guess who it was but only from something I picked up at a stage in the book.

I give this ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ out of ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ highly recommend it this is the type of mystery you like.

I would like to thank #Netgalley and #beyondthepagepublishers for an eARC of this book in exchange for an honest, fair and unbiased review.

  1. Again this is book two in the series, I really hate reading books out of order, lol, just my pet hate though. Now when I am picking books on netgalley I am trying to find ones that are the start of a series. As there is always a bit of backstory you miss in most series’s now. It was a very enjoyable read.
