BLACK SUMMER by M.W.Craven

Washington and Poe book 2

The synopsis

Jared Keaton, Michelin starred chef to the stars. Is currently serving a life sentence for the murder of his daughter Elizabeth. Although, her body was never found and Keaton was convicted largely on the testimony of Washington Poe.

But when a young woman staggers into a remote police station with evidence to prove that she is Elizabeth Keaton. Poe finds himself on the wrong side of the investigation and things are not looking good for him.

Poe calls on Tilly Bradshaw to come to his rescue and help him sort out what is going on. How can someone be dead and alive all at the same time but that’s what the evidence seems to show.

MY REVIEW

I only recently read the first book in this series The Puppet Show after it was recommended on a Facebook group I am in. I picked the first book up and was hooked. The characters are well thought out and make the book one of those that you never want to finish.

Black Summer brings those characters even more to life. It is in itself a stand-alone novel but I would highly recommend you start with The Puppet Show even if it’s just to get to know more about Washington and Poe. I found the second book to be better than the first and that’s down to the writing of MW Craven he has made the characters feel like real live people that you know and love. Tilly the socially awkward but highly intelligent young woman and Poe the charismatic but flawed detective Sergeant the two work so well together.

The story is dark and twisted at times but the added humour balances it out greatly. I think these two characters are here to stay and have a long future. The setting of the beautiful Lake District adds to the story.

Mark Craven has certainly made his mark in this genre. Looking forward to the next instalment.

This review is my own unbiased opinion after reading an ARC of the book from #netgalley # M.W.Craven.
